Some house things are just boring…you know?? Mailboxes are often one of them, but they don’t have to be! I’m sharing a fun and easy makeover project to take your mailbox from blah to wow in just a few steps!

Things are pretty bleak here in Iowa during the winter months. It’s cold and dreary out most days, so adding a little pop of color is the perfect way to warm-up our surroundings!

I decided to really make a splash with this DIY mailbox makeover using Color Shot Spray Paint! I ended up using a mix of spray and acrylic paints — in a few fun colors. The best part about this project is that the product list was very short! You could do this makeover on a super budget, but still have something fantastic to show for it!

Step 1

I’m currently experiencing wintery weather where I live, so the mailbox had to be painted indoors. If you’re somewhere that the weather is a little nicer, you could probably do this project right in place! I’m all about easy, so anything to save a step is a plus for me! The mailbox isn’t too hard to take on and off the post, though, so that’s a win!

Step 2

To create the “color block” design I had envisioned for the mailbox, I used painter’s tape and a garbage bag (over the end that I didn’t want painted). I like to seal painter’s tape when I use it, so I sprayed the same color of the mailbox (Colorshot Spray Paint - Blackout) over the top of the tape line.

Step 3

Now that the painter’s tape had a good seal, I could create my color block. I used Colorshot Spray Paint- Marshmallow to create a bright contrast with the black of the mailbox. To make sure the paint didn’t run, I applied the paint in quick bursts and in really light layers. Overall, I did between 6 and 7 light layers to get very nice coverage.

Step 4

Once I had the color block painted, I removed the garbage bag and started the really fun part! (Be careful…the dried paint on the bag flakes off easily and got a little messy.)

I taped off the flag, so that it could be painted with colorshot acrylic paint - Farmer’s Daughter. I also taped off a stripe design on the newly painted white color block. The stripes took a few coats to get the coverage I wanted, but I am thrilled with how they turned out! When I first started, I was only going to have 2 pink stripes, but at the last minute, decided to take them all the way around on the white color block! I am so happy I did…they look great!

Step 5

Adding the numbers proved to be the most difficult step for me. I had planned on using a stencil to put the numbers on, but it just didn’t look as nice as I’d wanted. Since I’d already reached my budget for this makeover (you know how important my budget is!), I decided to use the simple address stickers from the hardware store. I could have had some cut out of vinyl with a fancy machine, but I don’t have one of those. I also could have bought more expensive numbers from the hardware store, but I wanted to keep this a really budget-friendly project! I can always upgrade the numbers later, if I decide that they’re really that important to me. With the way that the mailbox makeover turned out, though, I don’t think I will!

I ended up lining the numbers up along the bottom of the mailbox because they weren’t all the same height. This way, you can’t tell and they all look straight!

Step 6

The last step is all about the details! The mailbox came with silver hardware, but I wanted it to blend into the black of the mailbox. I didn’t have any paint that I could use a paint brush with, but I didn’t want to spray it directly onto the mailbox…because of over-spray. So, I sprayed a bit of the Colorshot Spray Paint — blackout onto a paper plate and then I could use my paint brush to take the hardware from silver to black! Yay!
