6 Interior Design Trends for 2020

Interior design trends are fun to see, even when you’re not planning to incorporate them into your home. That’s why I wanted to share 6 interior design trends for 2020 with you. Maybe you’ll see something you already have in your home or something that you want to add!

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend a women’s conference in Des Moines, IA. The name of one of the speakers jumped out of the program right away, as soon as I read it—Jill Waage, Editor-in-Chief of Traditional Home magazine, a Meredith Corporation publication. I job-shadowed Jill for a day, in high school—a time when I had no clue what I wanted to be when I grew up. I’m not sure what her position with Meredith was at that time, but I remember thinking it was all so glamourous! While I didn’t pursue anything in the magazine industry, I still love getting an actual physical copy of magazines and pouring through them for life and home inspiration. I’m especially drawn to magazines now that my job is so focused on creating and sharing content—for Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and this blog!

When I saw her name on the program for the women’s conference, I knew that I wanted to go to the breakout session Jill was presenting, with the hopes of getting to chat with her. Also, I love all things interiors, so this was an obvious choice either way. I did get an opportunity to say ‘hello’ later in the day, and she remembered me—which was great! I mean…high school was a lot of years ago for me. There was no reason she really needed to remember me. Maybe she was just being polite when she said she did…ha! I’ll think the best, though.

The presentation was very informative and gave a lot of insight as to what the Better Homes and Gardens brand sees as trending in 2020. Jill shared her top 6, and I thought it would be fun to pass them on to you! Not only that, but I wanted to share a peek at my house with you, to see if I’m “trendy” or not. I think all the trends are represented, in some shape or form. Especially fun, because some of them are not done in a trendy way…they’re just here because I love them and have for years!

Muted and earthy greens are having a moment right now, especially in kitchen cabinetry. While I’d love to paint all our cabinets, I might have to settle for the green in the York Wallcoverings wallpaper in our main hallway and in the mural in my home office.

While it’s not as modern as a lot of the lights that I’ve been seeing in magazines and on Instagram, I am still in love with the basket pendant light I made for our entryway. You can find all the details for how I made it HERE.

I am a huge fan of punctuating a space with black. Some people think that it’s too harsh or too dark. It’s in fact the perfect color—or non-color. No matter what colors you use in your home, black will help to marry them. Jill pointed out, that this is especially true, if you have different finishes on fixtures, hardware, etc. If you add some black to the mix, they can all work together seamlessly!

Now, I don’t want to brag, but if this is true, I’ve been a plant mom since before it was a trend! I have always loved plants, both indoors and out. House plants clean the air, can soften edges or create them, and add color, while acting as a neutral. My go-to for a tricky spot that I can’t seem to find décor that works—add a plant!

I think this category could really be an umbrella for all the other trends, but one of the examples specifically is how caning is having a moment right now! In a lot of design styles, this has never left, but it’s becoming more mainstream right now…and being incorporated into new and unique designs! I have a few pieces with woven rattan caning, and they seem just as fresh and relevant now, as to when they were first designed. Mine are vintage pieces, but you can go to almost any big box retailer right now and find newly produced pieces with the nostalgic flair of caning.

I love this trend! Again, this has been me forever! I have a *slight* obsession with anything historical. I used to sit in my grandma’s basement and sift through boxes of “old stuff” for hours when I was little! I love hearing the stories associated with pieces I’ve collected or have been given—even better if there’s a picture involved! When we have things in our homes that have belonged to family members or show our history, it gives our space so much more meaning and depth.

Whether you have one or none of these interior design trends in your home right now, I encourage you to look at your surroundings! What could you give a little refresh or add a bit of trendiness too? I don’t think it’s necessary to follow every trend or that you should have all 6 of these trends happening in your home—unless you love them! I like to add things here and there that can bring our home up-to-date, and making it feel fresh, but without trying too hard or in too many permanent ways. Sometimes I don’t have any of the trendy things. It’s been obvious to me that when I try to add trendy décor, accessories, or elements that I really don’t care for, that they stick out like a sore thumb in our home. It’s ok to admit that you’re a traditionalist about some things. If you don’t find a trend in 2020 that you love, no worries! There will be a whole new list for 2021 that you can try out.

Do you have any of the 2020 trends in your home?
