Master Bedroom Retreat--Makeover Reveal

Friends!! It has been a hot-minute since I’ve started AND completed a makeover project for a client! My business has been shifting, so my projects look a little differently than they used to, plus, life just gets busy and things have been seeming to take a lot longer than they used to. Thankfully, I was able to finish a beautiful master bedroom transformation last week and am so excited to share the before and after photos with you!

My client was ready to make some changes to her master bedroom, but also wanted to keep it feeling serene and in the same color family. We worked together to find accent and décor pieces that would complement the furniture she already had. And, as all of us do, she had a budget that she wanted to stick to, so we tried to get the biggest bang for her bucks!

The first thing she tackled was to paint the walls. The paint was a little dark for the already darkish space and she was ready for something new, other than the stripes behind the bed. She had used Sherwin Williams Divine White (find it HERE) in a few other rooms in the house, so she chose to continue that into the bedroom. It did wonders to lighten and brighten the space! Her only complaint…painting that tray ceiling! Ha!

Once the painting was done, we moved on to the bigger pieces: artwork, curtains, console table, and floor poufs. (I’ll link everything for you at the end of the post!) My client was able to take direction from me as to pieces she needed to add to the space and shop for them within her budget. This part of the process is different with all my clients. Some know exactly what they want, but don’t know how to put it together in the space. Some want a little help finding the pieces by way of a Custom Shopping List I put together for them—they’re then able to choose from the 2 or 3 options I send, which is their favorite. And some want me to do all the shopping! Any and all of these are ok with me, although, it always helps when the client has some idea of what they like.

After she had the big things ordered, installed (curtains + rods + light sconces), and put together (floor lamp + console), it was time for me to shop for the finishing details! I had a budget of $200 and think I did well with that, only going over just a smidge. I always make sure there’s a little wiggle room with the budget because I’d rather see the project done and look great, rather than have it not be exactly what the client was wanting, or have it drag on for longer than it needs to. In my mind, it’s almost better to wait until you have the funds to do exactly what you want, instead of wasting time and money on something that’s not quite what you’ve envisioned. That’s the struggle that most people have with their homes, especially when it comes to hiring a professional. It might cost a bit extra to have someone help you with the process, but they will help you get faster results and, ultimately, spend less money in the long run.

I was able to add two live plants + pots, five throw pillows, two baskets, two throw blankets, and a few décor pieces with the budget I was given. My client also gathered all the extra décor + accessory pieces she had around the house for me to choose from to help finish the space. This is always a BIG help! I normally ask for these items when I first meet with a client, so we can see if anything needs to be painted or altered in any way before I come back to style. It worked out to just have the items gathered for me at the end this time, since they all worked with her color scheme. From the extras she had, I used two throw pillows (in addition to two that were already in the room), two architectural pieces, and a few décor items, including two that belonged to her grandma, so they were extra special. In addition to the pieces we discussed for her to purchase for the room, she also bought a few pieces of art for the walls. I almost always encourage clients to buy whatever art they can for themselves. It’s a personal choice and I want it to be something that they’re drawn to and enjoy. Once they’ve purchased, I can always add to them with less-important pieces.

I love the accent furniture and accessories that my client ended up with. Her bedroom furniture is mostly brown and neutrals, so she added a bit more interest with a couple of white furniture pieces, a hint of pattern, and introduced some gray and black into the mix with her curtains, floor poufs, light sconces, and art work. We kept the space serene by limiting the color and pattern, but also kept it interesting with lots of different textures and layering.

My favorite take-aways from this project:

  1. Paint changes everything! Even if your paint is in good condition, if you don’t love it…change it! It can make a ton of impact in your space for very little money + your time. Bonus points if it lightens the space. That should (almost) always be your goal. The stripes in my client’s bedroom had their moment, but it was time for something new. The lighter, brighter white hit just the right note to tie everything together.

  2. Hang your curtains higher! Seriously, though…84” is the standard curtain height, but unless your windows stop there and instantly hit the ceiling, please oh please don’t use that length of curtain. Instead, go for that 95”/96” length and hang them so they just touch the floor, or even pool a bit. That’s where the magic happens. Also, hang the brackets between 3”-5” out from the edge of the window, not right next to the window trim. These two things will take your curtains from looking hum-drum to fab. We not only went higher with the new curtains in my client’s room, but we also added panels to the single window in the reading nook. What a difference that made to finish that space!

  3. Layer your stuff! Choosing different heights, shapes, and sizes of décor and accent pieces will allow you to create so many vignettes within your space. It doesn’t mean that you will feel cluttered, but instead, like your space is much more intentional and finished. The large jug vase + wooden bead tassel is a great example of adding height to the dresser display, giving it a pop of color, and adding an extra layer of interest.

  4. Be willing to take risks! There were a few things that my client didn’t want to budge on, like adding too much pattern or color, but she did let her guard down a bit with the floor poufs (she picked them!) and with the blush-colored throw blankets. They’re just the right shade of pink, plus made of the most amazing gauze material with a raw-edged hem—perfect for this master bedroom retreat.

  5. Make the investment! My client receives money every year for Christmas with the only stipulations being that she spend it right away and on something that she normally wouldn’t do for herself. What a wonderful gift! If you don’t have that same scenario, start setting a little bit aside as you can. Creating a home that you love is so important, even if you just do it room by room. Have a plan and a goal and make it happen! It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money—having a plan can make such a difference. It will help you know what you need to do and buy, and it will allow you to snag the perfect pieces when they go on sale, so you’re not buying things all at once at full-price.

I’m so pleased with how this master bedroom makeover turned out. It went from a room that looked nice, but showed its age, to one that stepped-up its game and now looks like something special! If you need help with your own space, I would love to help! I have several options, depending on your needs. I can help you in person if you’re local (details HERE); work with you through virtual consultations, if you don’t live locally, or live locally and have a busy schedule (details HERE); or you can purchase my e-book—Master Bedroom Design: Creating a Space You Love—to help walk you through the process (details HERE).

I’d love to help take your space from hum-drum to fab!

What's in a name? A lot, if you ask me! Our first names are how we introduce ourselves to others. Last names are how we identify with those closest to us, our family. Nicknames are something even more personal, given to us by friends and family, they are special...just for us.  One mega im
