It’s no secret that I love plants and love to find ways to incorporate more, so I decided to make some plant hangers!

I have loved house plants for as long as I can remember. Growing up, we had 2 arches in the wall that separated our living room and dining room. My mom always had plants hanging in the arches, until they remodeled in the late 1990’s. It occurred to me a while back that I don’t know what happened to those plants once the arches were gone. Is it weird to want something back that has been gone for over 25 years…and, also, that you didn’t really care about back then?
And then I think about my grandma’s plants all the time… I didn’t really appreciate at the time what a green thumb she had, but I can clearly picture her plants and plant stands…especially the large vintage spiral piece she had in her front living room. It curved and had individual spots for potted plants. I don’t know if she sold it when she auctioned her belongings to downsize or if a family member has it. I need to ask!
Okay, now for the good stuff. Since I clearly love house plants and all things green, I’ve had to get creative with how to display them. I have plants sitting on all the flat surfaces. They’re in baskets, on trays, and propped on shelves. The one place I haven’t really gotten into displaying them is from the ceiling. I have one in my office, but that’s it. So, I’ve been scouring the house for a place that I could put some hanging plant holders—a place that would look natural and a part of the design.
After taking a peek around the different rooms in our house, I decided that a couple of plants hanging above the open railing area going to our basement would be perfect! Next question…how did I want to hang the plants? I love macramé plant holders, but I was wanting something a little fresher. I knew I wanted a tray, or flat surface of some sort, to hold the plant pot, but didn’t want the more rustic version with a slice of wood.
I know I had seen wooden rounds at the hardware store at one time, but my initial search didn’t come up with anything, so I did what any Millenial does—I searched Amazon! I found the wooden circle pine plaque right away that I was looking for. It couldn’t have been easier!
I wanted to use anything I had on-hand for the project, which turns out, was paint, a ceiling hook, and the ring to hang the plant holder on the ceiling hook. So, I grabbed the rest of the supplies from my favorite locally owned Ace Hardware! Since we’re trying to stay at home during Covid-19 social distancing I’m linking the rest of the supplies for you to purchase from the safety of your own home! Since I had the paint, paint brushes, and dye…and a few other things already, all I needed to get was some sort of rope/cord and something decorative to add. I had originally been thinking beads, but I didn’t want to add too much of a boho feeling, so I found some copper coupling fittings that are perfect for this project and added just the right touch of something special.
I had a couple National Hardware Elephant Hooks #gifted to use to hang the plant holder. Jason installed them easily, in about 5 minutes! I found similar ceiling hooks on Amazon—also from National Hardware. The last piece for the project that I already had was the ring that the I tied the strings of the plant holder onto, that then hangs on the hook. I used a couple of 2” curtain ring with clips. I removed the clips and the ring was perfect! I’m going to give them a bit of an upgrade with some Rub ‘n Buff, but if you didn’t want to mess with that, or don’t have any curtain rings on-hand, you can get a pack of brass rings on Amazon that are really nice. I think they’d be great to have around for projects of all kinds!
Okay…I lied. I had paint already to use to paint the wood plaque. I have several sample-size cans of Valspar paint from a mural project. We only used a tiny bit of each color…so those paints have been recycled into a lot of projects since then! In case you don’t have a paint stash hanging around, I think these craft paints would be really good to have on-hand for different projects, as well as, a variety of paint brushes.
The clothesline cord is really pretty on its own, so it’s totally up to you as to whether you want to dye it or not. I knew that I wanted mine to have some color, so I used Rit Dye. If you don’t have that just laying around, you could totally use the dye provided in this tie dye kit. Then with the extras….make some fun custom socks or t-shirts!
